Preppy Sign Tutorial

NOTE: If at any part of this tutorial you don’t understand, feel free to contact me in the chatbox or contact form.

Step One) Open the picture of your sitemodel or person you’re using.

Step Two) Use then pen tool or the polygon lasso tool and cut your sidemodel out. Go to Image > Image Size.  Make it 300 width and 400 height.

Step Three) If your using the pen tool, right click > make selection. If your using the polygon lasso tool, skip this step because it’s already got the dotty lines around it.

Step Four) Make 6 layers and have them all underneath the layer with your sitemodel. On the layer with your sitemodel on it now, Go to Image > Adjustments > Black and white. You can do a gradient on his/her shirt or something right now, But i’m not. Then you’ll just make a layer and merge it down, if you do the gradient.

Step Five) Double click on the layer with your sitemodel. Go to stroke, make your setting’s match mine:

Step Six) Merge that layer down, CTRL+E. Double click on the layer that has your sitemodel on it now, and make your setting’s match mine *The gray color is #575757* :

Step Seven) Merge that layer down, CTRL+E. Double click on the layer with your sitemodel on it. Before you do the stroking, you’re going to make a gradient with your colors, if you haven’t already. Make your setting’s match mine after you make your gradient:

Step Eight) Merge that layer down, CTRL+E. You’ll need this pattern Click here. You’ll have to define your pattern, Edit > Define Pattern. Make your setting’s match mine:

Step Nine) Keep the blending options open and click on ‘Drop Shadow’. Make your setting’s match mine:

Step Ten) Right click on the layer with your sitemodel > Merge Visible. That will make just one layer. Then make two layer’s and have them underneath  the layer with your sitemodel. Use the Magic Wand Tool and click around the sitemodel where the checker’s are, make sure they are all clicked. When that is all done Right Click > Select Inverse.

Step Eleven) Click on the layer at the very bottom. Then go to Select > Modify > Expand. Make it expand by 13 pixels. That will make the dotty lines expand out further. Go to your gradient tool, make sure your gradient is selected at the top. Click on the top left and drag your cursor down to the bottom right. Then your gradient is on there now! :)

Step Twelve) Click on the layer in the middle. This is where we are going to do our brush on the gradient. The brush we will be using is this one, Click here. Your just going to stamp it in the color white, #FFFFFF, onto the gradient so it covers it all.

Step Thirteen) Merge your middle layer down, the layer we stamped the brush on by hitting CTRL+E.

Step Fourteen) Make sure your gradient layer is selected, then make 6 layers above that. Then drag your gradient layer to the top of the 6 layers you just made. So your layer panel should have your sitemodel layer on the very top, then your gradient layer, then 6 blank layers underneath of your gradient layer.

Step Fifteen) Double click on your gradient layer. Go to stroke. Make your settings match mine:

Step Sixteen) Merge that layer down, CTRL+E. Double click on your new gradient layer. Go to to stroke. Make your settings match mine, using the color #575757:

Step Seventeen) Merge that layer down by hitting CTRL+E. Double click on the gradient layer. Go to stroke. Make your setting’s match mine:

Step Eighteen) Merge that layer down by hitting CTRL+E. Double click on your gradient layer. Go to stroke. Using the scanline pattern we used earlier, make your settings match mine:

Step Nineteen) Keep your blending options open and click on ‘Drop Shadow’. Make your setting’s match mine:

Step Twenty) Merge that layer down as many times as you need to by hitting CTRL+E. Merge it down until there is just two layers. Your sitemodel layer and your gradient layer.

Step Twenty One) Make two layers and drag them underneath your sitemodel layer and gradient layer, so they are at the bottom. Select the very bottom layer. Go to your fill bucket, select one of the colors from your color scheme using the eye dropper tool or the color swatches. Fill that layer in with that color. The whole background of your picture should be that color.

Step Twenty Two) Click on the blank layer above that. Open up this vector brush. Define it as a brush. You can do that by going to Edit > Define brush. Stamp your vector brush on the blank layer 2 times in the color black, #000000.

Step Twenty Three) Click on the little eyeball next to your gradient layer and your sitemodel layer, so that way just the vector is showing.  Select the layer that we stamped the vector brush on. Go to your brush tool, Get a circle brush and make it about 110px. In the middle of your vector where the black circle is, and cover that up with a color that isn’t in your color scheme.

Step Twenty Four) Make sure that the layer with your vector brush is selected. Go to your Magic Wand Tool and select a vector line. You’ll skip two and select another one and so on until your all the way around the vector. When you have all those vector lines selected, click on CTRL+J. That will make the vector lines on a new layer.

Step Twenty Five) Make a new layer and drag that layer underneath the vector lines that you just did in the step above. Double click on the vector lines layer and go to Color Overlay. Make the color one of your colors that you’re using. Then merge that layer down onto the blank layer by hitting CTRL+E. S

Step Twenty Six) Repeat the last 2 steps for the rest of your black vector lines.

Step Twenty Seven) Now your vector should be the color you filled and the rest of your 3 colors where the black vector lines used to be. You are going to merge those 3 layers with your different colors all onto one layer. Double click on that layer, and go to stroke. Make your settings match mine:

Step Twenty Eight) Leave your blending options open and go to pattern overlay.  Make this your pattern. Make your setting’s match mine:

Step Twenty Nine) Keep your blending options open and go to Drop Shadow. Make your setting’s match mine:

Step Thirty) Click on the layer that you stamped the black vector brush. Go to your magic wand tool. Select one of the colors that just have the color and nothing else (Same color as your bottom layer).  When you have it all selected (every 2 vector lines) then your going to click on the very bottom layer that you filled with your color. Then you’ll click CTRL+J. That’ll make them on a new layer.

Step Thirty One) Right click on the layer with your new vector lines and use a brand brush (hollister, abercrombie, aeropastle, etc.) and in the color white, #FFFFFF, stamp them on that layer. If you don’t have any, you can get some here: Click here.

Step Thirty Two) Repeat step thirty. Define this as a brush. Go to the layer you just created and right click on the little picture > select pixels. The brush you just defined, stamp it on in the color white, #FFFFFF.

Step Thirty Three) Repeat step thirty. Define this as a pattern. Go to the layer you just created and double click on it. Go to pattern overlay, make the pattern the one you just defined. Make your setting’s match mine:

Step Thirty Four) Right Click on your sitemodel layer > flatten image. You can add a border and text if you want. Your sign is done after you do that :) This is my final image without the border:
